Healthy Eating Research (HER) and the HER Food Labelling Work Group hosted a webinar on front-of-package labeling on food products as a promising policy to inform consumers and promote healthy diets. In August 2022, three organizations submitted a citizen’s petition asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement a mandatory interpretive front-of-package nutrition labeling system for packaged foods and the White House national nutrition strategy includes plans to develop a front-of-package food labeling system. FDA is also working to develop a new “healthy” symbol for the front of packaged foods. The webinar included three experts who will comment on the policy and advocacy landscape for front-of-package food labeling and the latest global research on how best to design such labels and how they influence consumers. Sarah Sorscher, JD, MPH – Deputy Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest; Anna Grummon, PhD – Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine; Gabriela Fretes, PhD – Associate Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute. Moderated by Drs. Christina Roberto and Marissa G. Hall, co-chairs of the HER Food Labelling Work Group.
