Food + Planet was established in 2020 as a collective of health professionals dedicated to promoting sustainable food systems. Their vision is to develop a science and practice of nutrition that respects nature as the foundation of health. They aim to empower one million health professionals to advocate for sustainable diets. To achieve these ambitious objectives, they leverage collective wisdom and incorporate diverse knowledge, passion, and experience across all sustainable diets. food systems.

Explore the 2024 findings of a survey conducted by Food + Planet and Today’s Dietitian, revealing key insights from 1,106 Registered Dietitians across the U.S. Some key results include:

  • Strong Support but Limited Training – While 96% of dietitians believe they should advocate for sustainable diets, half lack formal training, with a significant reliance (27%) on potentially biased, industry-sponsored education.
  • Knowledge Gaps in Key Sustainability Areas – Dietitians feel confident in some areas of sustainability such as food safety (62%), but show low confidence in sustainability areas like climate-smart agriculture (20%) and good governance (14%).
  • Demand for Practical Resources – Reported barriers, including low consumer awareness (63%) and a lack of tools (56%), highlight an urgent need for resources to empower dietitians in promoting sustainable diets.

    The Food+Planet white paper and website launched in 2021 provides a road map of how we might meaningfully close the gap to create a movement among nutrition professionals and catalyze change within the food system.

    Blue Foods as Medicine Cookbook and other resources on Aquatic Foods:

    This essential book on blue foods provides the basics on the nutrition and sustainability benefits of aquatic foods, as well as how you can find them in your supermarket and prepare sea vegetables and bivalves at home with quick, easy tips. While the cookbook is designed to be used by food, health, and nutrition professionals to educate consumers, it can be enjoyed equally by home cooks. In addition, quick cooking videos are available for the recipes to highlight their ease and convenience in the kitchen.
